REDEMPTION RUNS FROM ME
I see bluebirds fly by my window
They only come by here but one time a year
So why would you care anyway?
And the law was changed on Monday
As our troops were taught to never betray
While everyone turned away
But you could be my paradise and I could be your Northern Lights
But in the end were gonna' pay the price

Redemption runs from me ever since I was little
Temptation grows on a tree right in the middle of our house

Well I'm trying to find some piece of mind
Where I can raise some good intentions
Seems like nobody knows where that is
So the next time you hear them knock
You know they might take a little, they might take alot
Just be thankful for what you've got

Redemption runs from me ever since I was little
Temptation grows on a tree right in the middle of our house
And you know salvation is never gonna' come
Until you finally learn to love someone

Everybody's gone and it all falls down
And the call you made.... i can understand, I understand

Redemption runs from me ever since I was little
Temptation grows on a tree right in the middle of our house
Salvation comes around to those who can find it
When redemption came to town, I must've been blinded
And you know salvation is never gonna' come
Until you finally learn to love someone

But the bluebirds fly by my window
They only come by here but one time a year
So why would you care anyway?

SIMPLE MATH
It don't take a telegraph
All it is is simple math
The distance between what you have
And what you really need

So he climbed up the bank and in the water he layed down
'Neath the crescent moon and the stars are all around
With the forces battered but still the fight goes on
Lost everything that mattered but you still can't see what's wrong
Maybe that's your big mistake, maybe that's why you've never won

Doesn't take a photograph
To see your soul's been sawed in half
Part of you stays stuck in the track
While the other half wants to leave
The past lies ripped and torn apart
The field lays fallow, the flint won't spark
And a man's commitment to leave his mark will never set him free

My soul is sailing off on those perfect wings
As he took to the sun he said, "I must deal with imperfect things"
And he dropped his bow and arrow 'cause he knew his time was done
And as he spoke to the boy from his carriage he said,
"Knock 'em dead young one, no matter how fast it all goes by you're never gonna' get it all done"

And it doesn't take a telegraph
All it is is simple math
The difference between the things you have
And what you really need
And you don't need a diagram
To figure out the kind of man
Who tries to do the best he can
And unto this vow he heeds

All the windows shattered
It was a total eclipse of the sun
Never knew how to kill
But you sure knew how to stun
It's kinda' hard to stack 'em up when there's none

PROMISELAND
I got news for you brother
There's a sound in the distance in the cold night air
And it's hard to recover
When the things you believe in just disappear
Soon you'll discover
There's some things in life even you don't deserve
I got news for you brother
It might seem bad now but it's gonna' get worse

So much said but we hardly spoke
Our dreams appeared on wings of smoke

You got no rules to follow
Nothin's gained if nothing's risked
But If the hearts are hollow
Then the seas are deep but your dyin' of thirst
And it's a hard pill to swallow
That the Promiseland just don't exist
I got news for you brother
We're gonna have to talk to the father first

So much said but we hardly spoke
And as time stood still we lost all hope
And our dreams disappeared on wings of smoke

It's a sticky situation
But a man's gotta' do what a man's gotta' do
And I've been waiting at the station
I've been waiting for a train that will not come through

No fair ending, Know that inside
Change is as cold as the wind
And I don't need to be sending out telegrams
With colors watered down
Yet solemn words sound so hard

I got news for you brother
It's getting mighty hard for the common man
You gotta' move undercover
Gotta' navigate any way you can
You gotta' lie to each other
Only so much truth that a man can stand
I got news for you brother
That's what's become of the Promiseland

So much was said so little spoke
And as time stood still we lost all hope
And that sound in the distance
Sounds more like a choking throat
As our dreams disappear on wings of smoke

I got news for you brother
You can hire a firing squad but this'll have to come first
And all the songs of sorrow
Come from a dying man who's life was cursed
I can't chew the bone
All the road signs say that you can't go home
And if you care for another
You must be prepared to have it all be gone
It's a blues for you brother
There's some things in life you'll never understand
I got news for you brother Don't put your faith in the Promiseland

IN THE SUMMER SUN
Set in stone was the date of our wedding
Went outside to find some way to explain
And at that time as she gathered vines
But not forgetting every word that is veiled in deceit
Destroys every chance you've ever had of happiness

I'm gone what's done is done
They found the newborn one
By the river among the reeds
Laying In the summer sun
My sweet young one

Most say that men are no better than their ghosts
I'll get my tombstone and hang out a sign
So that you might be released
I dropped my basket and ran like a sinner to communion
Understand I never wanted to let you go
It's not that bad to be a quiter
if you ain't got the wood to make it thru the winter
So I keep tellin' myself that it ain't that bad

I've done what I've done
For the freedom of a newborn slave
Among the reeds n' the summer sun
Lies the life I gave
Found by a royal maid

Done my day as I fold my hands upon my heart
Break my bones in a fury over the desperate part
Take my cure
I'm gonna' drink it down like I always have to
Go elsewhere where nobody will require my love

I'm gone what's done is done
They've found the newborn one
By the river among the reeds
Warm in the summer sun
My sweet young one

What I know is I never wanted to hurt you
In my soul I was always only yours
At that time as she gathered vines fro the forest
As she tried to find some way to explain

POUND OF FLESH
I got a pound of flesh to burn
the mountain high
who wants to know why?

I think I've heard the precious bird
I got a star that loves to burn
Now I'm bound for a better town
I got my fill of this rage and disease
He pulled a 45 on his 2nd son
On the violent seas

I got a pound of flesh, a battle hymn
A microscope and a mandolin
And by this seed you have agreed to be bound within

He's too far off to be guessing,
This time you gotta get it right
And when the sun hid behind a cloud at midday
Bid her adieu as he swiftly slipped out a sight

We had a love in silence
You owned this heart of mine once
Got a love that begs and barks
Not one that understands

I think I heard the precious bird
I got a star that wants to burn

I climb over rocks and I wrestle to win
Too late to forgive or forget what he did
Somethings are better left alone where they're hid
But I"m gonna' track him down

N' I got a pound of flesh, a battle hymn
A microscope and a mandolin
And by this seed you have agreed to be bound within

And we've seen the forces gather
In the dim and ashy light
You can feel the flames just raging in me
Bid her adieu as he swiftly slipped out a sight

Ours was a love in silence

I got a love that begs and barks
Not one that understands
When she releases she leaves a mark
Then slips across the sand

INDEED
I've never had much luck, think I might of told you
Then I was dumbstruck by something new coming into view
You might be everything that I've ever lost
And I might need to bring one more horse
'Cause there just might be one more river to cross

Indeed I'm telling you I care
Indeed you know I want you here
Indeed

Think you've been around a pretty longtime
Long enough to know about it
All the sudden you've had to find
A way to keep from slipping off this time
And to keep on climbin' up
Doesn't make much much difference what time or where
If you can use my assistance I'm gonna' be right there
So don't feel lost, 'cause it just might be
One more river that's left to cross

Indeed I'm telling you I care
Indeed I'm sitting in my chair
And I need to make you know it's clear
Indeed

We didn't need so much we
We didn't have so long
One day you look up
And everything's gone
We didn't want it all
We didn't want it at all

Doesn't make much much difference what time or where
Don't feel lost, 'cause it just might be
One more river that's left to cross

Indeed I'm telling you I care
Indeed I'm sitting in my chair
And I need to make you know it's clear
Indeed Indeed Indeed

DISHONEST JOHN
The kitchen phone rings
Something has to be done
You can talk to the "Wall" about it
He knows everyone
If it's solace you seek
Then things don't add up
You better not look back too far
you might see something you wish you forgot

It's time to see what you can
And what you cannot do
Can you live out your life to the end
Without spilling a clue

A thief can't get work
So he has to beg
But he has too much pride to do that work
So he steals instead

Deep blue eyes and calm
Dishonest John

How I happened to lead this life
And where it all began
Back in my drinking days
I, I killed a terrible man

But the judge was a friend of mine
And the bargain was right
Sixteen years for me, I served nine
And learned to read and write

He always rises before the dawn
Dishonest John

When they buried my son here
Under this grass so cold
Where a moral truth is a hollow tooth
Just crowned with gold

I see no difference
Between gambling and practicing Law
Or selling the Elixir of Youth
Or working with a carpenter's saw
Everything is chance
And that's the chance i took
But it landed me in jail
And I've been branded a swindler and a crook

Steel blue eyes and calm
Dishonest John

For twenty long years
I kept my secret buried
Till it became too much weight
For this old horse to have to carry
So when I broke down crying and choking
I had the memory of blue jays chattering all day
and the smell of pine wood smoking

Steel Blue eyes and calm
Dishonest John
He'll be gone before the dawn has come
Dishonest John

SING THEIR PRAYERS AWAY
When the hour came to meet you there
You knew who held my fate
My arms were just two alibis
The branches were my veins

My arms could feel your weight
And you could feel the pain

I only hope your door is oak
And in your heart you're strong
So that you can be rid of the personal things
That you have held so long
It's time to break this bond

But you should be warned
As you take a step towards
The door that yet remains
To reveal the things that burn the most
Where wind rips thru the grain
To sing their prayers away

Everyone gets shorted some
Memories never fade
Hoping to find some distance
Or some words that he could say
In that wide open space
There's a chance to slip away

But with less of this you need more of that
And it's just worthless to complain
But the root of it all is the way you were left
On that cold and crazy day
When they sang your prayers away

But you should be warned
As you take a step towards
The door that yet remains
To reveal the things that burn the most
The branches were my veins
To sing their prayers away

Bound for the red sun
What's down the road?
What's goin' on?
I assumed I was done
But I'm not sure of that now
Can I sing your prayers away?
To sing their prayers away

HOW MANY WAYS CAN A RICH MAN DIE?
They got my mother to run
I didn't have homeland security
And like a father with his son
I had to comb my heart for purity
I'm on my way back home by my side
Honey that's where I'm goin' comin' home to you

How many ways can a rich man die?
How many ways can a rich man die?
How many ways, How many ways, How many ways?

I see my future in the road
I'd always find my way of getting back
I know the pathway to the soul
But its hard sometimes to stay on track
N' it's strange how he died right on cue, comin' home to you

How many ways can a rich man die?
How many ways can a rich man die?
How many ways, How many ways, How many ways?

From a mysterious plane crash, or a sudden heart attack
Or drown in his pool at night
He could fall from a 5th floor window
He'll go down with the seven strikes

Stairways of light show the way my love
And i will forever be the moon

How many ways can a rich man die?
How many ways can a rich man die?
How many ways, How many ways, How many ways?
How many ways, How many ways, How many ways?
Lightning, snakebite, flood, seven strikes

Stairways of light show the way my love
And i will forever be the moon

HANG ME
From the rooftops rang injustice and the wind just wailed
Everyone in the room fell silent as the confession was read
And the beam of misconception was a mirror to them all
But with no time left for miracles
Lord let me make this final call

Hang me if it's true
But don't give me your bad advice
Tell me when it's through
But don't look at me with those sad eyes
When my time is done I will settle down and I'll hurt someone
But until that time has come please don't give up on understanding

Even though I feel afraid
My hands are cold as they dig my grave
But they don't seem concerned that the truth be found
Some of them stand, some of them run, it depends on what they've done
This confession was planned to play into the hands of each of you, everyone

Hang me if it's true
But don't give me your bad advice
Tell me when it's through
But don't look at me with those sad eyes
When my time is done I will settle down and I'll hurt someone
If you think you knew me then sign in here and make it clear

THE BALLAD OF SHOTGUN THROAT
I was runnin' down the road
It was right before the prohibition
I had a half a ham hock stashed in my sock
And the strangest intuition

You've got to dry me up
Before you take me out

N' I raced through the back roads
I sailed the high seas
But if you want the real Mccoy
You gotta' get down on your knees

I watch the river as she rises
I've got the moonshine in my eyes
I don't want to have to leave this place forever
But once I'm gone you might finally realize

Who drank the juice
Who tied the noose
I'm on the loose again

All I wanna' do is sing my song
Gotta' keep runnin' all night long
Everybody saw the hatchet job
You gotta' get up and get out of the fog

You have to dry me up
Before you take me out
And when I ask to see the justice
You just convince me of my doubts

I watch the river as she rises
I've got the moonshine in my eyes
I don't want to have to leave this town forever
But once I'm gone you might finally realize

Who drank the juice
Who tied the noose
Would this excuse explain
Who cooked the goose
Let's call a truce
I'm on the loose again

TAKING OVER THE CONDUCTOR
I'm taking over the conductor
I'm gonna take that train while it's rollin' down this track
I'm gonna hold that stoker
I'm gonna' lock that door to the firebox room
While he's turned his back

Brakeman's gotta' wife and son
In my heart I'm gonna' hurt no one
Just tryin' to save my soul
Don't wanna' die for the things I've sung

But I keep trippin' over a four leaf clover that you left behind
I'm thinkin' over all the things we spoke about
How far it is to the county line
And what lightning striker sent a hi-ball sign

I got four million reasons that beg me to stay
But I'll leave here with only what's mine
I mean what I say and I know how it looks
But I'm tellin' you I'm not that unkind

I'm takin' over the conductor
Escape anyway I can
I'd go 5-7 years
But this jury wants to hang a man

I'm leaving on the 309
No time left to change your mind
This ain't no lollipop, It's showdown time
The bulls are kicking in the furnace room door
And the brakeman's lying in the deadhead car

I got four million reasons that beg me to stay
But I'll leave here with only what's mine
I mean what I say and I know how it looks
But I'm tellin' you I'm not that unkind

I gotta' keep hiding from the local law
I've gotta' keep running from the things I saw
May God protect me with his tooth and claw

Taking over the conductor
It's gonna be quick business
But I keep trippin' that four leaf clover
N' I wonder what your story is

Doo do doo doo doo do doo doo
Do doo doo doo doo doo do

TOMORROW'S TOO LATE
I'm tired of thinking over everything I do
And you know that I dont wanna be that way again
When I saw the tide was shifting
I informed everyone I knew
That we don't have many hours left
And there's still so much to do

Tomorrow's too late
Today's too long
The sky is grey
The world is over now
Tomorrow's too late
Be strong
I'm awake, I'm awake
And I'm calling on your devotion and your faith
Tomorrow's just too late

I would sail 'n ocean liner but I could not get away
'Cause this world is sinking faster than any boat ever could
So I floated on my lonesome and I landed on your lawn
It's only natural if you're wonderin'
If I'm right or if I'm wrong

Tomorrow's too late
Today's too long
The world is over
The world is over now
Tomorrow's too late the time has come
As I lay here awake
Tomorrow's too late
And when it's gone this song plays on

And so that sun was sinking fast
And we thought it would never end
And as I look back on the human race
Thank you for the time we spent

I must try to make it over and visit with my friends
And take a step outside myself and see how this road bends
I'm tired of trying to fake it, and it's time to make amends
Don't stop yourself, don't hesitate, make it real before it ends

Tomorrow's too late
Todays too long
The world is over
The world is over now
Tomorrow's too late
So be strong
I'm awake, here I wait
Tomorrow's too late so I lay awake hopin' you'll come home
And I'm calling on your devotion and your faith
'Cause tomorrow's just too late

THE WOLF KING
Hey, take a look in the mirror
With halls like that, who needs classrooms
With all the shapes of stuff
As though you know their lives at all
Where did you hide
how did you break the diamond sky
I feel that dog at the watering hole
I wanna feel my hand against the skull

who shot the monster bullet
who called the murder squads
no other way to put it, at all
what's that you say

my god, the last king to rule this land
was captured by the Palestines
it isn't everyday you're laid out
or fade out right on time

Hold that line
they blow alot of smoke
and the wolf repeats
I heard the body break
take it out
take it out now

I bet you got something special
What will it take?
You're nothing but a good man
But I can tell, the best has come
and Special thoughts can break someone

my god, the last king to rule this land
was captured by the Palestines
it isn't everyday you're laid out
or fade out right on time

My lambs wool shakes
I wanna hear from a wolf
Maybe a "close to home" (baby come closer)
I feel that dog at the watering hole
I wanna feel my hands against the skull

TABLES
Tables in the hallway
Chairs out in the wind
But all I wanted was to see you again
You were the one I chose
It was unspoken
Nothing I find will ever replace
The things that lay broken now
As you float out in space
Looking back on what you've created
But as the paint on the portrait dries
Did we know then?
Did we know why?
And is it a sign that we should leave?
That we should leave
Bug's been found
Time to reexamine things

I'm a simple heart but I'm pretty sure
You're the one that makes me happy

But as the paint on the portrait dries
Did we know then?
Did we know why?
And is it a sign that we should leave?
That we should leave
Bug's been found
Time to reexamine things

Tables in the hallway
Chairs out in the wind
All I wanted was to see you again

please tell me Mescalito
i wanna feel all the love she brings
so take me Mescalito

SPIDERCLOUD
Maybe that's what I spill
Maybe someone else's dreaming
Maybe that's why I kill
But it's difficult to say
Maybe that's why you fell
Maybe you breathed some powder
Maybe that's what I spilled
Baby that's how I kill
Divided we stand and united no man
can hide from the spider cloud

Baby that's what I sent
Wrapped in a yellow blanket
Maybe that's what I dreamt
But you couldn't see the eyes
Maybe that's what I meant
somebody's screamin' louder
the mouth was shut and all sewed up
so you couldn't hear the lies
Divided we stand and united no man
can hide from the spider cloud
So I'm waiting for you
To come out of your house
And start talking without moving your mouth

Oh maybe that's why you fell
Maybe you breathed some powder
Maybe that's what I spilled
Baby that's how I kill
Maybe that's what I sent
All wrapped in a yellow blanket
The mouth was shut and all sewed up
But you couldn't see the eyes
Divided we stand and united no man
can hide from the spider cloud
I'm waiting for you
To come out of the house
And start talking without moving your mouth

HOW FAR AWAY A SCAR IS
This might be everything you've always dreamed of
Don't let the moment slip away
No furious forces a here to control you
Nothing remains now to make you stay
Only 16 candles blowin' out (down) that place
So I had to use a time bomb
And gather up the pieces then begin to ressurect
Everything you think of it, so much worse than you'd suspect

I'm the one that wakes you up at night
That knows where you've been
I'm the path of contradiction
When you know you just can't win
Shake it up, kick it, loose let out
Turn it upside down

There's not enough money here to make you happy
Who kicked holes in all the doors of your house?
16 years all melted on the ground
Insinuating that you've learned your sound
How long did it take for you to figure out the miracle
Before you swept up the cumulus
To measure out the depth of just how far away a scar is
And wore off your fingertips trying to feel how hot the core is

I'm the one that wakes you up at night
That knows where you've been
I'm the path of contradiction
When you know you just can't win
Shake it up, kick it loose, let it out
Turn it upside down

Then she broke my heart
A bad thing to do
I soaked in water
But it reminded me of you
It reminded me of you
And how you wore off all your fingertips
and you still don't have a clue

I'm the one that wakes you up at night
That knows where you've been
I'm the path of contradiction
When you know you just can't win
Shake it up, kick it loose, let it out
Turn it upside down
Shake it up, kick it loose, let it out
Turn it upside down
Shake it up, kick it loose, let it out
Turn it upside down

AFTER THAT
say there's something on my mind
you will be the next thing I will come to after that,
after that

sing that the eaves are broken
and time is on it's side
the world begins to doze
the bravest of the chosen
no matter what they try
will find that the way is closed
if i could only wake up
and break out of this
but i can't stop thinking about you
but it's sweet what you'd say to me
everything was wrong, so wrong
and the things that we failed to see

now that you are gone, so gone

say there's something on my mind
you will be the next thing I will come to after that,
after that

Failure of devotion
the brokenhearted brand
a love that noone knows
in the early morning hours
a most delicate advance
will trample down the rose
On hills the snow is melting
color has gone
and there's nothing left here without you

but it's sweet what you say to me
everything was wrong, so wrong
and the things that we failed to see
now that you are gone, so gone

say there's something on my mind
you will be the next thing I will come to after that,

COUNTING DOWN
I was breaking through
the heavy atmosphere
i was counting down from seven

If i could reach you now
but you're no longer there
(the bees would speak my vows)

I should have never left your presence
And I don't agree that you don't love me
And we can't be together
And I don't believe that you don't see
That you and me are forever
And her mouth hangs down
And her mouth hangs down

I see the breakin' clouds
I read the hemisphere
It almost seems as if I've been forgiven

I can feel the breeze
and as I see the trees
then I realize that it was heaven

And I don't agree that you don't love me
And that we can't be together
And I don't believe that you don't see
That you and me are forever
And her mouth hangs down
And her mouth hangs down
And her mouth hangs down
And her mouth hangs down

LET THE WORLD FALL APART
I must consider all of this gone
i fell by the river where the flows is strong
i'm dragged down under
I swallowed sand
i have become the faded man
hey pretty baby your broken heart
might hit you tomorrow don't make it stop

Let the world fall apart
and the sun's just a spark
hold on tight to everything you treasure

i must've met you in these stranded parts
you spilled diamonds n' i spilled my heart
the ground was shakin'
the sky turned red
They said if i kissed you I'd be dead
i must've kissed you a thousand times
must be this distance that makes you mine

Let the world fall apart
and the sun's just a spark
Nothing here was meant to last forever
and the moon is a rock
and the safe is unlocked
So hold on tight to everything you treasure

I must consider all of this gone
i fell by the river where the flows is strong
i'm dragged down under
I swallowed sand
i have become the faded man

THE STORM AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN
There's a little world
at the edge of the sea
there's another world
that's been waiting for me
and i dropped my pearl in the bottom of your basket
and all I'm asking is
please, please won't you let me have it

And this world that I dream in my name
is a world that I just can't tame

Something you never saw
Came from out of the blue
You were carried away and dropped down thru
To the storm at the bottom of the ocean

and these winds of change
hold still some days
but they're ready to steal
how much a man's life pays

They say "take it away"
but they just don't mean it
and with the money they made
they intend to keep it

but don't it break you're heart, waiting so long
workin' your back out
from that hard earned place under the gun

It's a beautiful storm down at the bottom of the ocean
N' nightime sun at the top of the waves
let me take you there son
down to the bottom of the ocean
and let yourself indulge in these final days

WASHED UP AND AWAY
I know that number in my head won't be enough
I hope that you'll know what to say in the the rain
1000 of years and millions of tigers
always the passionate save the survivors
cruel and beautiful game
when the world begins
you were washed up and away

for this world and it's laws
for all of the reasons because
we go back to the way that it was
washed up and away

the sun goes up, the sun goes down
where I live that's the only sound
cruel and beautiful game
when the world begins you were washed up and away

BAG OF NAILS
Are you the Beast of Love or are you Her
With your devices - set to undermine
These tender moments all wrapped in fur
Is this some new couture or are you just outta' time

I hear the sound of Perry Como as we swerve
Everybody in his town's so white
Had I have known what was up around the curve
I mighta' missed it or we mighta' died of fright

But like a pipe bomb explodes my brain
So much love remains unspoken
Things were goin' like we were hopin'
Until this bag of nails broke open

Carry me over the Falls of Niagara
Can't shoot a photograph of a burning flame
I ain't been married since last October
And you can't prove a past life 'til you come back again

Like a pipe bomb explodes my brain
So much love remains unspoken
Things were goin' like we were hopin'
Until this bag of nails broke open

HEAD OFF
Underhanded, underfed is how you feel today
You left your trash in old New York and headed off my way
Blackballed and nailed to the wall, you all look so absurd

Now what's with limiters? who needs to limit?
Each step of the way...its just one more gimmick
If you bring your daddy, remember he's a man of the cloth
Don't need no presents, no remarks
Why don't you stop thinking about it and take your head Off

RICOCHET MAN
My head is smoking
N' the wire's tapped
He's flying faster than a blue-eyed bat
You can't get away once your in his sight
You can hear him say ''make my day tonight''
''make my day tonight''

He shoots his gun into the air
He rolls the dice
Ricochet Man, Ricoricochet Man
It's no surprise that no one cares
He moves too fast
Ricoricochet Man was here

You can't get away once your in his sight
You can hear him say ''make my day tonight''
''make my day tonight''

He shoots his gun into the air
He rolls the dice
Ricochet Man, Ricoricochet Man
It's no surprise that no one cares
He moves too fast
Ricoricochet Man was here

RED LIGHT
red head red tide red rose red light
I heard about the curfew
I wondered why on earth you
Would ever want to turn off the lights

red cross red eyes red crow red light
It happened right in front of me
The earth was swallowed by the sea
And everyone was bathing in red light

1000 EYES
Baby I'm free to fly
Maybe I'm free to win
I don't stop at nothing
'Cause nothin' is my friend

Baby I'm free to fly
I don't crawl on the floor
I gotta' be alive
For just a few months more

The horses drown on the 4th of July
There's a miracle everyday
When you look into my 1000 eyes
You've got nothin' to say

Some people call in the fly
Some people like to stall
Right now you're mouth is dry
And your backed up against the wall
Maybe I came to see your dad
Maybe I came to say
Baby take control of the sunset

The horses drown on the 4th of July
There's a miracle everyday
When you look into my 1000 eyes
You've got nothin' to say

Baby I'm free to fly
I don't crawl on the floor
I'll only be alive
For just a few months more

The horses drown on the 4th of July
There's a miracle everyday
When you look into my 1000 eyes
You've got nothin' to say

Baby I'm free to fly
Baby I'm free to fall

MRS. BODEEN
At 17 young Bodeen
Prepared to roll the dice
Like a rockslide from a mountaintop
He never did like his backwoods life
So down below where the hardwood grows
A stranger took him down
Some funny talk and the stranger walked
But no body was ever found

Everyone leaves
Nobody stays
Mrs. Bodeen watches over our graves

I was tryin' to find a different view
I was hard on your tracks
I was slippin' into the Badlands
N' I knew I'd pay the price
There was dirt dug up and a deadman's luck
And a name that had no sound
Some paper loans A horses bones
But no money was ever found

Some of us free
Some of us ain't
But to Mrs. Bodeen you can file a complaint

First funeral of a friend of mine
People were shifting in the sun
Everyone took a final look
Before they had to run
Now he's gone and you say
How you miss him so much
But in all the time we spun around
He never mentioned you even once

Everyone bleeds
Nobody cares
Mrs. Bodeen
Just sits and stares

Everyone leaves
Nobody stays
Mrs. Bodeen watches over our graves

I'M THE ONE
I'm the one, the one that you left standin'
Your Seventh Son, the one that you abandoned
Doesn't take a lot, to get it though, just what your game is
N' when I blow my top, I'm gonna' take you down
I'm gonna' burn those letters

Out your window, underneath your floor
Pounding in your head and bangin' on your door
I waited and waited and I slept in snow
But you left me in the valley where the trees don't grow

I'm the one, the one that reminds you
Of what you've done at the ending of the story
Go have your fun, but when you finish taking inventory

Broken hands, a twisted tongue,
You can't face the things you've done
You're gonna' stumble, you know you're gonna' choke
'Cause you can't find your way out of the evil smoke

THE SKY WAS GREY
when they arrived
her lips were cold
they found her in the river
where they panned for gold
skin was blue and the sky was grey
and they buried her the very next day

don't make a sound
don't wake that happy face
just turn around
watch the rolling water take her down

SOURPUSS
These are the trees we are the clouds
These are the chains that all hang down
Leave from the streets leave from the crowds
You've got the choice to "Boogie-Down"

These are the sounds these are the screams
These are the open veins
These are the voices of unrest
Somethings will never change

There's a bangin' in my head like there's something loose
Why ya' gotta' give me such a sourpuss

Baby by my side I may not settle down
I drink my bitter sauce and then suddenly I found
She brings me down, down

We got the power to break your heart
We got the pill to make you smart
We got the clouds to make it rain
Make it rain

Every egg ya' lay is just a fuckin' goose
Why ya' gotta' give me such a sourpuss

Baby by my side I may not settle down
I drink my bitter sauce and then suddenly I found
She brings me down, way down

Everyone's lookin' for some California sunshine
Everyone's lookin' for some California moonshine

Sour Power Flower Puss
Hour after hour such a sourpuss

THE LAND OF THE TEN FOOT TALL
It's a rub down thing that you make me think of
Was a washed-out scene when I was astray
Called my hellhound dog up from the canyon
N' I called him Champagne in a vacant way

Don't be tellin' me why I, I should call
Don't be tellin' me where my fingers have grown,
It may not make no sense to the man in the black and tan
I was torn between them Ten Foot Tall

Brother's want to bleed
And mothers want to breed
There's a scurryin' in the Land of The Ten Foot Tall

Like any self-respectin' man
I know the things I can
And the things that I cannot turn away
Summer's gonna' break and the gunner's on the take
It's hollow in the Land of The Ten Foot Tall

The swallow's gone to sleep
But trouble still runs deep
There's a somethin' in the Land of The Ten Foot Tall

Now when ''Man Greed'' showed his face
I was tempted to say
There's nothin' left between us I can mend
But as his troubles headed deep
I cursed the ground and tried to keep my senses
N' burrowed in The Land of The Ten Foot Tall

It's written on the wall
All things young and small
There's a burnin' in the Land of The Ten Foot Tall

Listen to the call
All things young and small
There's trouble in the Land of The Ten Foot Tall

THE FAST ONE
this is the fast one
It's something you can't prove
It just keeps poundin' in your head

and it's a vast one
the one you always choose
it's gonna' haunt you when your dead

everybody arrives and everybody gotta' go
if you don't remember why
then you already know
everybody got a different thing
otherwise it wouldn't be insane
and a full moon takes me away now

this is the fast one
the one with metal horses
the one worth waiting for instead

the violent last one
but noone carries the information
beneath a sky that's turnin' red

not like the last one
this time you can't lose
this time you won't be misled

There are somethings that a man just can't allow
I know I don't have wings but i wish i did somehow
everybody gotta' do their thing
otherwise it wouldn't be insane
and a full moon takes me away now

it's probably broke down
it's probably broke down

this is the fast one
the one that noone uses
It just keeps dancin' in your head

your gonna' take my breadth away
why don't you take my call
you're gonna' be my destiny
why don't you brake my fall

[ back up to album list ]

ANY LEFT
You keep pushin' and pushin' till it's swollen up my arm
You always want more livin' out here on the farm
There's lots of mashed potatoes and for bee's we had a swarm
But I guess you might've waited just a little too long
'Cause now they're gone

If I had any left
I would give them to you
If I had any left

Now we're out in Arizona where everything is wrong
And we've taken all the apples off the tree
There were golden grapes for kissing, purple flowers for the dawn
There was even a place to hide the keys
But now it's gone

If I had any left
I would give them to you
If I had any left
If I had any left
I would give them to you
If I had any left

MILKWEED MAN
Close all the windows, close all the doors
There's never been a time like this before
Under one condition, hold all the ammunition
It's the end of a trip, the ship is comin' into shore
I've been so cinco time after time
N' I've waited in the world before us
But these days it seems a man can't do what he wants to
Without shinin' his shoes on another ones face

Hey Milkweed man
Are you tired of bringing things down
Hey Milkweed man
Tell me who's the sad girl
You wrap your arms around
Milkweed man can I come too
Or is it only for the lonely who're as sick as you
I am
Everybody suffers

Everywhere, Everyday
People hate one another
They put cobra's in the cornfield
And then lay and wait
But over in my neighbor's yard
A bug lays its egg on the dying branches
And I realize it's time for me to be on my way

Hey Milkweed man
Are you tired of bringing things down
Hey Milkweed man
Tell me who's the sad girl
You wrap your arms around
Milkweed man can I come too
Or is it only for the lonely who're as sick as you
I am
Everybody suffers, Everybody suffers

COPPERHEAD
I was born under the sun
Watching the ball and my ego run
I'll be laughin' on your grave
After you fall from the world you saved

No one's comin and no one's gettin' out
Cause there's a box with a bomb and it's tickin' under the house

I don't care if you're livin' or dead
I don't wanna see your copperhead
I'm gonna tell ya, you go south
My friend's sister's got a cotton mouth
She's my princess, she's my queen
I'm gonna find where she hid the ring
I wanna know what makes my baby sing
Yes I'm gonna find where she's hid the ring

There's some things that I don't know much about
Like why the wind's so free and at night when the lights go out

With a mind so free, why you gotta bend
Everything you see has a message it sends
Life is good, we sure did laugh
Learned a few things about compromise

If life's so sweet , well it sure moves fast
And you're asleep a universe away
But to see you now , ah it sure'd be good
But the problem is I just can't stay

There's some things that I don't know much about
Like why the wind's so free and at night when the lights go out

Set me free cause I don't wanna spend the rest
Of my life til' the living end
Waiting for you always to come
All I wanna do is get me some
I don't care if you're living or dead
I don't wanna see your copperhead
I don't wanna see your copperhead

FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER
When I saw Frankenstein's daughter
She was headed down the road
She survived the slaughter
but she carried a heavy load

I met Frankenstein's daughter
I took her home today
I showed her to my mother
Who said make her your slave

She always looked out for her son
Til' he was taken away
When i saw Frankenstein's daughter
I Fell on my knees and prayed

I tried to take her pulse
But it was getting weak
I think her body's in love
I think her mind is asleep

She walked in dripping in blood
She came down from the canyon
No one thought she would live again and
No one showed her compassion

(bridge)

Don't pretend we gather, Don't pretend we know
Another heart was shattered, another told you so

When I met Frankenstein's daughter
She was headed down the road
She (had) survived the slaughter
But she carried a heavy load

MATTER OF TIME
Took only a minute as I turned away
And saw that you left me behind
'Cause I caught you wavin'
As you left on that boat
It was only a matter of time

I didn't have anything that I couldn't give
Only my life and I wanted my life just to live

Stuck here up on the bed
Struck by the fear
That our hearts just might mend
N' I feel the blow and it hits me like wind
N' outside the blue skies are breakin' again

And though I know I'm asking for
Some way to make you happy
Someday we never say goodbye
Someday we never say goodbye
Someday we never say goodbye

GORILLA
No more conversation
Where you talk, talk, talk
Now it's time to penetrate
The enemy you fought
Walkin through the parachutes
I almost lost my mind'
The slightest whisper tears me up
I just need to unwind

(Gorilla, Gorilla)

He was waiting in a parking lot
Just 20 miles away
She was in a swimming pool
On one hot summer's day
There just ain't that much distance
Between the ones who'd say
I will kill you, kill you

(Gorilla, Gorilla)
solo

It might be speculation,
But we all got arms and legs
Just set me up on a mountain top
Where I can fry some eggs
But I gotta grandma who burns rubber in her yard
N' I'm gonna move out to the suburbs

(Gorilla, Gorilla)

IMPOSSIBLE THINGS
If I could change, If I could fly
If I could only feel your sweet lips on mine
Though I know we cannot remain
For tomorrow has become today
Prepare your soul so that you may drink
From what the future may hold
Compared to what you might think

Hey, hey, hey, now. Any day now
You got blackbirds in your pockets
Diamonds buried underground
Hey, hey, hey, now. Find a way out
Only deadmen drive Roll's Royces
Take me up or take me down

So I must go retrieve and tame
The impossible things that my lover demands
I'd change my world or I'd even step aside
To know my caring for you could heal the scars that cry

Hey, hey, hey, now. Any day now
You got blackbirds in your pockets
You got breadcrumbs on the ground
Hey, hey, hey, now. Find a way out
Only deadmen drive Roll's Royces
Shake me up or shake me down

Do you recall where the lions lie
Can you feel what's comin' while your dreams keep runnin' inside
If you follow me down to the place that we both new
From here I will stare forever back at you

Hey, hey, hey, now. Any day now
You got blackbirds in your pockets
Diamonds buried underground
Hey, hey, hey, now. Find a way out
Only deadmen drive Roll's Royces
Take me up or take me down

Hey, hey, hey, now. Any day now

OUT AND DOWN
Too late to wait for free love

Now that I know it's so cold

It's nice to stay high though, hi

Hold my hand

Too doomed by fright to leave your cage

You talk about politics just like a senator

And when I get you in back of my head

As I run past you I spin out and down

Don't tell me, "All she needs is thoughts in her head"

"If love bleeds then wipe it up with bread"

"Why does nobody believe?" is all she ever said to me.

Do I have to see through solid rock

Be strong enough to take the shock

What do I have to break

How long must I lay awake

Just to get a chance to start

A chance that we might fall apart

TEARS OF LOVE
Do you have me figured out
Maybe you still have some doubt
Check my heart until the end
Chart a course to who I'll send

Tears of love
Tears of love
I can't refuse her
No matter what I do
And I'm ah choosin' only you

So when am I gonna' see you
Wear that wedding gown
N' what I gotta do to make you see
These tears come fallin' down

Tears of love
Tears of love
I can't lose her
No matter what I do
And I'm choosin' only you

MAGIC 8 BALL
You talk to me in riddles
You talk to me in rhymes
I follow what you tell me
But I still get lost sometimes
8 ball won't ya help me
And then I'll disappear
Will I be a wealthy man
By this time next year?
"You must be joking"

I've taken all my money and spent it on a girl
But she acts like she don't know me
Like we're from different worlds
Tell me magic 8 ball
What's a man to do?
They say that I'm unmarriable
So tell me is it true?
"I think that it is likely, although it is too soon to tell."

So tell me Mr. 8 Ball
And please make it clear
Provide me with an answer
One that I can hear
Fast forward through this story
I know what I've become
But am I gonna burn in hell
For all the things I've done
"Without a doubt"
magic 8 ball
"It is so"
magic 8 ball

But it wouldn't cover
A fifth of the pain that might still remain
'Cause I can't change and be your lover

But how the time slipped
It's no surprise you're out of my hands
But still on my lips

So if I dont make it I just wanted to say

So she cooked a goose for the Blue Face Man

GONNA SEE HER (SOMETIME)
Met her in the laughing sun
And I knew my life was done
I'd seen her sometime it seems

If I had to swear on it
I'd stake my life I'd place my bet
I know I'm gonna see her sometime

The debt was mine that I repaid
And now I'm free to be her slave
I'm gonna' see her sometime it seems

She flows through these streams and open stands
I feel her heart fall into my hands
And when the worms chew on my bones
In the mornin' on my radio
And at night when the lights turn low
I know I'll see her sometime

To sit you down here
And tell you why you have to die
You see things are getting worse

WHEN THE RAIN STOPS
changed my plans
just to meet you here at the market
but you came with friends that wanted to explore
first of the day you wanna hold my hand
but that's not the way you thought it was

'cause I can't stand the weather when the rain stops
I can't stand the pressure when the tear drops
I can't find the number but I know it's gonna' fall

yet I know it's not a bit too late for man
I was harvesting my bounty in little ways
do your dreams go on
or do they just float across the sand
makin' a new home for them to lay?

I don't know the weather when the rain stops
I can't stand the pressure when the tear drops
I can't find my Bessie but I hope she's gonna come

I can't stand the weather when the rain stops
I can't stand the pressure when the tear drops
I can't wait forever to let myself go free

SANDPAPER
Have you ever been held up by a piece of toast
Or lifted right out of your aquarium
Tempted by the ruse of a prarie fire
Or escorted out of the Vatican

Scrape and break and grind me down so fine
Rub me raw so I don't even mind
Sandpaper Sandpaper Sandpaper Sandpaper

I was drivin' on a grease lifter 3000 miles from home
And dropped off into hysteria
I was laughin' with a crew aboard a sinkin' submarine
Right off the coast of Russia

Scrape and break and grind me down so fine
Rub me raw so I don't even mind
Sandpaper Sandpaper Sandpaper Sandpaper

.....She kills me.....She kills me again.....

Rogue elephants sweep this station clean
And audio lines are cut before the broadcast
Torpedoes, tornadoes, tattoos and gangrene
Only Rocky and Bullwinkle understood the seriousness of the situation

Scrape and break and grind me down so fine
Rub me raw so I don't even mind

NEVER LET IT OUT
come see me, let's play
come see me, please stay
come baby, come smile
come baby, stay a little while

I swallowed down the river
as it carried me away
it kicked me in my stomach
and it drowned the words I said

come see me, let's play
come see me, please stay

come see why the truth is lost as if you even care
when I returned your eyes were crossed
and you had changed your hair
I was so embarrased I could never let it out

come see me, let's play
come see me, please stay
come baby, come smile
come baby, stay a little while

I watched the vultures circle
and my love's head falling down
it rolled across the table
slowly falling to the ground

come see me, let's play
come see me, please stay
come baby, come smile
come baby, stay a little while

come see me, please stay

CAN'T STOP CRYING
Out in a graveyard way out west
He hears his future calling
It's impossible to get some rest
With all these ashes falling
Remember the days we stood our ground
And the torch we carried
Now times when I look around
Everything seems so scary

Seems like the dark is getting darker
Maybe I should go inside
Where no one waits for me
With her arms open wide
I see the stallion shout his obscenities
At the empty sky
No one owes him more than me
And for this I must apologize

(chorus)
Right now my feet feel stuck in plaster
I musta' drunk a pint of turpentine
I smell smoke, run from disaster
I want to love you but I can't stop crying
I want to love you but I can't stop crying
I want to love you but I can't stop crying

Out in the hall they're ill at ease
I hear them grumble, groan and whine
Back in the ballroom she turns her heel
And donates a painting to the blind
I run through these muddy fields
Trying to gain myself a few yards
But I go hungry at every meal
Now my hands can't even deal a deck of cards

(chorus)
Right now my feet feel stuck in plaster
I musta' drunk a pint of turpentine
I smell smoke, I run from disaster
I want to love you but I can't stop crying
I want to love you but I can't stop crying
I want to love you but I can't stop crying

I wonder if I'm under your spell
Anything is possible
I met a man he said he knew you well
But they were rushing him off to the hospital

A big red river flows over the sand
We'll watch the war on replay
Clutch the bomb, crush the hand
Blow you all to doomsday
Ghosts appear in the patterns of my T.V. set
n' lambs jump over the fence
If I ever wake up
I'm gonna find out the hard way
You can't trust anyone who burns incense
You can't trust anyone who always burns incense

(chorus)
Right now my feet feel stuck in plaster
I musta' drunk a pint of turpentine
I smell smoke, run from disaster
I want to love you but I can't stop crying
I want to love you but I can't stop crying
I want to love you but I can't stop crying

BANKSHOT
A thousand seconds and a hundred nights
It ended all too soon
Now I try to see you by candle light
And bankshots off the moon
And all the passing faces
Remind me of vows we did take
Not enough of a reason
For either one of us to remain

(chorus)
Once I looked into your deep blue eyes
You captured my soul
I knew I was surrounded
At the watering hole
I could not stay there
I could not remain
With so much to sacrifice
And so little to gain

The odds were against us
Our timing was bad
We tried to make it through
But the force overtook us
We lost what we had
Now its bankshots off of the moon
Where is the love we needed
The colored rocks we shared
Have all but been forgotten
I can't find them now anywhere

(chorus)
Once I looked into your deep blue eyes
You captured my soul
I knew I was surrounded
At the watering hole
I could not stay there
I could not remain
With so much to sacrifice
And so little to gain

You know the day that I met you
The birds flew high in heaven
Now I can't forget you
But I can't go back again

(chorus)
Once I looked into your deep blue eyes
You captured my soul
I knew I was surrounded
At the watering hole
I could not stay there
I could not remain
With so much to sacrifice
And so little to gain

THEN WE'LL SAIL
I rub my eyes and try to wake myself
From this unpleasant dream
Seems like only yesterday
I heard the first mate scream
None of us is gentle
Because we live out on the sea
Still it brings salt water to these eyes
Remembering how cruel those bums could be
All that filled my pockets
As the clouds turned into bones
Was the bounty of a baptist minister
And some cries from the unknown
Still they tried to kill me
Though their plan had one small quirk
Now I'm seeking my revenge
And how I love my line of work

(chorus)
If you can find your own way back
Fit this moon into a pail
Bring me six doves in a sack
And then we'll sail
And then we'll sail
And then we'll sail
And then we'll sail

Can't put this weight on my shoulders down
I could not bury it I have to carry it around
And now my ship lies capsized
And the wind is blowin'
And my soul is baptized by this bitter gale
And then we'll sail
And then we'll sail
And then we'll sail
And then we'll sail

Twiddle-thumbs and Bolivar
Did help me to achieve
Tracking down their bodies
To a place where widows grieve
Compassion for them pounded me
Like waves upon a shore
Though I'd been robbed of every pleasure
That I'd followed them there for

(chorus)
If you can find your own way back
Fit the moon into a pail
Bring me six doves in a sack
And then we'll sail
And then we'll sail
And then we'll sail
And then we'll sail

And now my ship lies capsized
and the wind is blowin'
Let my soul be baptized by this bitter gale
And then we'll sail
And then we'll sail
And then we'll sail
And then we'll sail

DONE WRONG
Some people feel like bad luck
Is just a freight train ready to roll
Somewhere down the track
You may get some distance
But you'll never get her out of your soul
I only hope if you get stuck once
You might call me to bring you some gas
After all it's the last thing I could do

(chorus)
My love is like a rock
Hurts so much I can't talk to you
And though we've stopped the clock
You keep burning up this heart of mine

I feel the flush of a memory
As I entered the empty room
Where we once stood as bride and groom
Without a thought in my head
I must've picked up a dangerous broom
I guess that ancient dust
Should not have been stirred up
No matter how long I wait
It always seems too soon

(chorus)
My love is like a rock
Hurts so much I can't talk to you
Though we've stopped the clock
You keep burning up this heart of mine
My love is like a rock
Hurts so much just to talk to you
And though we've stopped the clock
You keep burning up this heart of mine

Even now I would still turn back
If I had a reason to stay
My eyes are open and the sky's turning black
I kneel beside the river
The wound still hasn't gone
With patience to deliver me
From things that I've done wrong
Things that I've done wrong
Still I can't find no happy home

THE STAIN
Lately when I crumble crackers
It reminds me of those days
We used to drive them backwards
Over the dried up fields of clay
Memories so real to me
I can almost taste them
I dodged cannon balls and Christmas trees
Just to bring you the big blue bracelet

(chorus)
I said my, my when you go by
Must you cause such a commotion
I wash in your water three times a day
But I still can't pledge my devotion
Ain't it a shame, ain't it a shame
So much grief, no relief
It's always the same

I picked a four leaf clover
Hopin' that my luck might change
It didn't take me very long to find
You was acting mighty strange
You'd sit in a chair for hours
Tying big knots in your hair
Tell me the truth
When you look in the mirror
Is there really anybody there?

(chorus)
I said my, my when you go by
Must you cause such a commotion
I wash in your water three times a day
But I still can't pledge my devotion
Ain't it a shame, ain't it a shame
So much grief, no relief
It's always the same

She could cool my brow
If anybody could
I asked her for some water
I guess she must have misunderstood

(chorus)
I said my, my when you go by
Must you cause such a commotion
I wash in your water three times a day
But I still can't pledge my devotion
Ain't it a shame, ain't it a shame
So much grief, no relief
It's always the same

I see the web your spinning
And I know I'm not the last
I promise you baby
When I go my way
I won't be lookin' back

(chorus)
I said my, my when you go by
Must you cause such a commotion
I wash in your water three times a day
But I still can't pledge my devotion
Ain't it a shame, ain't it a shame
So much grief, no relief
It's always the same

BIG ENOUGH TO DISAPPEAR
You wish you had something
To come along and change your mind
Like a ticket to a magic carpet ride
You only get one chance in this lifetime
But you blew it out like a candle at your bedside

You go to see the most fabulous opponent
But he looks like a Greek statue
With hunger in his eyes
Then the glue melts
And the whole thing falls apart
He becomes so hard to recognize

(chorus)
Everything you thought that you knew
They knew first
You keep on digging deeper
But it just gets worse
Now you're big enough to disappear off the face of the earth

I was eating hot soup
When you turned to me and said
You think you burned your tongue
Who do you think I am
One of those Egyptian cats
Half cooked and half eaten?

(chorus)
Everything you thought that you knew
They knew first
You keep on digging deeper
But it just gets worse
Now you're big enough to disappear off the face of the earth
Now you're big enough to disappear off the face of the earth

Past goes past like a wind filled mast
Taking time with it on it's way
Umbrellas are the last thing I'd expect to see
On such a warm and sunny day

(if you really want to) HURT SOMEONE
She remembers what it felt like
To be held so close beneath the lamplight
And inside she hears someone talking on the phone
Just survival, human nature
To be frightened by this gaining danger
And if you walk on water
Your going to sink just like a stone
If I ask why it's just that I feel a little strange
To see you falling from the sky
Falling down like rain

(chorus)
If you really want to hurt somebody
You know exactly what to say
One day you're gonna' find you need him badly
By then he'll be too far away
Did you not think love was sacred
And the kisses so sweet
Has the memory faded
Like the flowers at your feet

When the wind blows hold it steady
And if you hear loud guns get ready
Choose your exit and head for the open road
If your traveling on a cold night
Be clear, true and forthright
Remember what she said
And don't let your head explode

(chorus)
If you really want to hurt somebody
You know exactly what to say
One day you're gonna' find you need him badly
By then he'll be too far away
Did you not think love was sacred
And the kisses so sweet
Has the memory faded
Like the flowers at your feet

I was worried when I met you
In the fury I might forget you
But like a tattoo
I will carry you to the grave

We all need someone to count upon
Count upon yourself they say
We might have held much closer
If I had not been betrayed

(chorus)
If you really want to hurt somebody
You know exactly what to say
One day you're gonna' find you'll need him badly
By then he'll be too far away
Did you not think love was sacred
And the kisses so sweet
Has the memory faded
Like the flowers at your feet

I saw you hesitated
You know some things you just can't repeat
You seem so ungrateful
Like the flowers at your feet
Did you not think love was sacred
And the kisses so sweet
Just like the flowers at your feet

DINNER TABLE
The mother starts to reappear
The holy wine is put away
Then by Friday afternoon
She sends the children on their merry way
It's too soon, you move too fast
It's too soon, forget your past
The daughter ran to meet him there
I remember well that day
They put a bull in a motel room
And send the children on their merry way

(chorus)
I see my lifeline run deep
I seen a spark that I could not keep
So unlike me to be unstable
I'm so sorry that I fell asleep
At your dinner table
At your dinner table

I live behind an empty lot
See if I have my hands up
Shake bags of leaves on little kids
Sometimes the wind tells me I should stop
It's too soon, you move too fast
It's too soon, forget your past
My deep regrets to fellow man
I understand the funk he's in
I asked him what he needed then
Except a job and an open hand

(chorus)
I see my lifeline run deep
I seen a spark that I could not keep
So unlike me to be unstable
I'm so sorry that I fell asleep
At your dinner table
At your dinner table

It's too soon, there's no one else
It's much too soon, forget yourself
And so I felt my belly ache
I fed myself a new food
I saw the eggs begin to break
I watched the birth of a new brood

(chorus)
I see my lifeline run deep
I seen a spark that I could not keep
So unlike me to be unstable
I'm so sorry that I fell asleep
At your dinner table
At your dinner table

SCRATCH O' LIFE
I can still hear you calling
Right under the apple tree
And it felt mighty right
Late at night
Just hiding from the world we'd seen
But the world won't change
'Cause I had you
Then the scratch of life
Came burning through
And now you're gone
I can't go on
Inside I am lonely
But outside its nearly dawn

(chorus)
Don't put out the fire
That burns beneath the skin
Or the rhythm of the heartbeat
Beating from within
What makes us love
Makes us weep
You've got a scratch of life
That runs so deep

With a hole in the side of my coat
And a little tickle inside of my throat
I been standin' on the corner
Late at night
Just waiting for the lights to change
And who was there but you
Dressed in your evening gown
Who was in those pictures
Laying on the ground
Didn't take no psychic
To foresee what you'd do
I was snow-blind and unsteady
But like a fool I fell for you

(chorus)
Don't put out the fire
That burns beneath the skin
Or the rhythm of the heartbeat
Beating from within
What makes us love
Makes us weep
You've got a scratch of life
That runs so deep

Well the sun goes down at home
Where we both could never be
How hard I tried to reach you
To unfold that mystery
The scar has healed
But the war goes on
We had such high hopes
It was the one thing in common

Now each of us has some story down
'Bout how we've been lost
And how we've been found
Now I'm in the car and its raining down
So good to see the water as it falls to the ground

(chorus)
Don't put out the fire
That burns beneath the skin
Or the rhythm of the heartbeat
Keeps beating from within
What makes us love
Makes us weep
'Cause you've got a scratch of life
That runs so deep

MAN OVERBOARD
You're invited to step in to see
How a lovin' man became a wretch like me
Searching for treasure in a sunken chest
So far from land n' how we needed rest

We were fighting, smashing n' drunk
We hadn't noticed that the ship had sunk
With no flag to fly under the sun
Baby the bad times had just begun

(chorus)
Hey, Hey, Man Overboard
Might be you and it might be me
Let me know when you find the answer
Meet me at the bottom of the deep blue sea

Ambition turned to greed
And the things we loved became the things we need
A cry went out all hands on deck
But no crew was found
And soon the ship was wrecked

I decided not to stay
Knowing good and well
Things would end that way
With the power out and the work ain't done
Baby the bad times had just begun

(chorus)
Hey, Hey, Man Overboard
Might be you and it might be me
Let me know when you find the answer
Meet me at the bottom of the deep blue sea

Oh sometimes I remember that once I had a home
With dogs and cats and a stove with gas
Even had my own front lawn
Then the hard times came fast
How I sorely needed cash
I heard about the treasure and I was gone

Some men escape to the forest
Some men take to the sky
They say it's sink or swim once you jump in
Me, I sleep with them fishes and Dutchmen that fly

(chorus)
Hey, Hey, Man Overboard
Might be you and it might be me
Bring me the buckets and fire the doctor
Meet me at the bottom of the deep blue sea

Hey, Hey, Man Overboard
Might be me and it might be me
Only water lies between us
Meet me at the bottom of the deep blue
I'll meet you in the mornin'
And the nightime too
Meet me at the bottom of the deep blue sea

BESIDE ME ONCE AGAIN
Thistles thorns and berries
Shine on this early dawn
I will know how deeply you've touched me
By the hole that remains where you've gone

(chorus)
I will take my sleep
Hoping you'll be on the other end
But I will not rest
Until you lay down beside me once again

Standin' in the yard with the ponies
My ticket lays torn on the grass
Hopin' one day I'll be yours completely
n' things will stop spinning so fast

(chorus)
And I will take my sleep
Hoping you'll be on the other end
But I will not rest

I will take my sleep
Hoping to you I will be sent
But I will not rest
Until you lay down beside me once again
Until you lay down beside me once again

WHEN SHE ARRIVES
Whistle blows at the factory
Freedom turns his back to me
Like a child I will try to understand
In awhile I become a desperate man

(chorus)
And the vision's coming back to me
Like a full moon in the sky
There'll be a ticker tape parade
And the trumpets played
Balloons passing by
We'll put the milk cow out in the pasture
When she arrives

I stand at the door with the porch light on
For the sound of her car on the road to my home
I recall late last fall when she was here
And I will try to do my best 'till she returns

(chorus)
And the vision's coming back to me
Like a full moon in the sky
There'll be a ticker tape parade
And the trumpets played
Balloons passing by
We'll put the milk cows out in the pasture
When she arrives

And there's so much I don't know about
She'll protect me from harm
Whether we hit wind or snow
She'll be keeping me warm
And I would ask her to stay
But there's no use in it anyway
I don't think so

The distance becomes smaller
As I hear her round the corner
She'll smile when she hears the things I've planned
And the flowers long to be touched by her hands

(chorus)
And the vision's coming back to me
Like a full moon in the sky
There'll be a ticker tape parade
And the trumpets played
And the junkies passing by
We'll put the milk cows out in the pasture
When she arrives

My heart can't beat any faster than
When she arrives
I'm gonna melt from the heat of the passion
When she arrives
We'll put the milk cows out in the pasture
When she arrives

UNTIL TOMORROW
Well the temperature changed in a menacing way
It was all a matter of course
I'd of been sooner out of your way
If our lines hadn't gotten so crossed
Nothing now remains the same
I paid for my ticket and I swallowed the flame
Jumped out of my seat
I don't wanna' repeat
That crazy nightmare scene again, now babe
My beautiful babe
And I'm not here to beg or to borrow
Do I owe myself another day
If I question what I've come here for
Then I might now know a little more
But all I know now is I can't stay

(chorus)
And I'll be here 'till tomorrow
And beyond that I can't wait
As the loneliness of the dawn begins to break

Well the cloud tears off the edge of the sky
And sometimes I feel lost
But I never stopped to ask myself why
I'm afraid of how much it might cost
Once I had all the time I could spend
I came to your door and you let me in
We both knew at the time it was true
That one day it would have to end, oh babe
Magnificent babe
And I don't wanna' have to face tomorrow
Or these visions that keep swirling in my head
Everything now seems a little hollow
As you sleep beside me in this bed

(chorus)
And I'll be here 'till tomorrow
And beyond that I can't wait
As the loneliness of the dawn begins to break

Maybe you're caught in a hole somewhere
Maybe you just can't see
Maybe you're taking a bath, baby
Maybe you've gotten over me
I don't like how it all crashed in
But baby I can't go back again
You could've given me everything
That I ever needed then, oh babe
Impossible babe
And I'm not here to beg or to borrow
Do I owe myself another day
If I question what I've come here for
Then I might now know just a little more
But all I know now is I can't stay

(chorus)
And I'll be here 'till tomorrow
And beyond that I can't wait
As the loneliness of the dawn begins to break

Yes I'll be here 'till tomorrow
And beyond that I can't wait
As the loneliness of the dawn begins to break
As the loneliness of my heart begins to break

EGGTOOTH'S ADVENTURE
A hot and muggy swamp with patches of tar and quicksand, boiling mud, sticks with pieces of toilet paper stuck to them. This was the land that ran through his blood. This was home for Eggtooth. Eggtooth and his best friend Feverhead explored every inch of the area on their daily wanderings. They would turn over the rocks and watch bugs.

One day Feverhead had to stay home n' rake up leaves for a soup for visiting relatives. Eggtooth was on his own that day to explore. He climbed to the top of the ridge. From there he saw a town that he'd never visited. He decided to go down.

The town had no name, no clocks, but the citizens had all the time in the world. Like fish swimming upstream. They had funny names like Ionesco and Dupont and their hands looked like fat, red inflated rubber gloves. Their heads were simple geometric shapes; triangles, rectangles, squares, even a few trapezoids. But their personalities were anything but logical. Warm, happy, sad, an emotional people these were. They told Eggtooth simple truths like, "Starve a fever, feed a cold". "No time like the present." "Home is where the heart is." Eggtooth danced his feet sore with the villagers and then they sat around and tore up the floorboards to watch the bugs and mice scurry from the first light. Eggtooth asked why moths fly into the light and bugs and mice run away from it. One of the elders explained, "One man's meat is another man's potatoes." Eggtooth thought about this all the way home. He had so much to tell Feverhead about....tomorrow.

THE TREES THAT SHADED US
This is a story about losing your heart
Not about giving it away
Somebody took it and tore it apart
Then the tear drops
The lights go out
And the door locks
And there's nothing left to say

(chorus)
I stood and I waited
As long as I could
'Till the things that felt right once
No longer felt good
And the trees that shaded us
Now bend and twist
And the things we waited for
No longer exist...anymore

With a matchbox in your fingertips
I hear the scratching sound
As you try to light a new way
I would have given everything I ever had
To be near you
When the lights go out
But I'm leavin'
'Cause there's no reason I should stay

(chorus)
I stood and I waited
As long as I could
'Till the things that felt right once
No longer felt good
And the trees that shaded us
Now bend and twist
And the things we waited for
No longer exist...anymore

(chorus)
I stood and I waited
Waited until
'Till the river was dried up
And the ocean stood still
And the trees that shaded us
Now bend and sway
Telling me the time has come
To be on my way

FOR THE BRIDE
I had a dream that I had spent
Another life with you
And this one's no accident
We shall see it come to pass
This ain't no dream and now your mine until the last

(chorus)
I'll take a patch of blue sky
To wrap around you while you sleep
I'll take the latches off of my door
I'm gonna' let you in so deep
And surround you with clouds and pearls
Now that you're my girl
Something in my life becomes complete

I had a dream most every night
There was something on the other side
That I could not quite get to
But to see you here
Standing, dressed in white
It seems to me that I have finally broken through

(chorus)
I'll take a patch of blue sky
To wrap around you while you sleep
I'll take the latches off of my door
I'm gonna' let you in so deep
And surround you with clouds and pearls
Now that you're my girl
Something in my life becomes complete

He couldn't sleep because of the rain, so he decided to walk to the seashore and listen to the breakers. On his way to the beach he stumbled onto a field of yams and magpies. Eggtooth was suddenly very hungry and he wanted to dig up the yams but first he had to rid the field of the magpie birds. He ran towards them spinning round and round, holding his arms straight out. This just delighted the birds and they laughed at Eggtooth and dropped berries on his head. And then Eggtooth got so dizzy that he fell down and the ground and sky began to spin around him. The world turned so fast that it threw the birds out of the trees and the sky and finally Eggtooth was rid of them. He got up and began to dig for the yams. He dug and dug but the yams held fast. Eggtooth got frustrated. He gave the yams one last angry kick and walked towards the beach to catch some fish because by this time he'd become stark raving hungry. But from behind him he heard the sound of many small feet running. He turned around and saw the yams coming to get him. Some of them had one foot, some had two feet, some had three feet, and some had four feet. And as they came at Eggtooth it sounded like this.

Tiki-Tiki Boom-Boom, Tiki-Tiki Boom
Tiki-Tiki Boom-Boom, Tiki-Tiki Boom
Tiki-Tiki Boom-Boom, Tiki-Tiki Boom
Tiki-Tiki Boom-Boom, Tiki-Tiki Boom
Boooooffffff

Eggtooth ran as fast as he could and the yams ran right behind him. Eggtooth jumped over the creek and the yams jumped over the creek. Eggtooth galloped towards home and the yams galloped all the way. Eggtooth ran into his yard, passing his good friend the gate and he yelled, "The yams are after me, don't let 'em in, help!" The gate liked Eggtooth because Eggtooth never slammed him. So when the yams came to the gate he slammed closed on their heads and they broke into little pieces that Eggtooth gathered up and brought in the house and threw into the simmering pot. And to this day when Eggtooth even thinks of magpies, he remembers the sound of the yams as they chased him through the forest that dreadful night.

NO ONE'S MIND
Driving in circles, sleeping in chairs
Laying awake through the night
All of the faces with the stained glass tears
Bowing their heads in the light
Too much pressure you swallow a pill
Too much pressure will break down your will
And nobody knew until

(chorus)
No one's mind sleeps on rocks
No one's mind hardly ever talks
No one's mind hard as steel
No one's mind should ever feel like this

Lost in the crowds and the shuffling mobs
Searching through books for a thread
Throwing coins to the fountains
And prayers to the gods
Why are so many people misled?
When you treasure the days overspill
When you measure the cups never fill
And the journey is steeper uphill

(chorus)
No one's mind handles all the curves
No one's mind gets what it deserves
No one's mind ever has to doubt
That sometimes there's just too much to figure out

Silent, lonely
Searching the sky and the stars
Quietly hoping
Wishing all that we had could be ours
Could be ours

And then from the next room a muffling of sobs
A pillow covers a head
Erasing the future not facing the job
But there's so much more work when you're dead
Too much pressure they tighten the straps
Too much pressure waits like open traps
And nobody knew till it snapped

(chorus)
No one's mind sleeps on rocks
No one's mind hardly ever talks
No one's mind hard as steel
No one's mind should ever feel like this
No one's mind should ever feel like this

90 MILES AN HOUR
I took you home from the party
And we kissed in fun
A few stolen kisses
And no harm was done
'Stead of stoppin' when we should
We kept right on
And then suddenly we found
That the brakes were gone

You belong to somebody else
And I do too
It's crazy, crazy
Being here with you
Like a bad motorcycle
With a devil on the seat
Goin' 90 Miles An Hour Down A Dead End Street
90 Miles An Hour Down A Dead End Street

I didn't want to want you
But I had no choice
I can no longer listen
To that warning voice
Or the sound of thunder
When two hearts beat
Goin' 90 Miles An Hour Down A Dead End Street
90 Miles An Hour Down A Dead End Street

And your not free
To belong to me
And I could never really be your own
And your lips on mine
Are like sweet, sweet wine
But were headed for a wall of stone

Well the warning signs are everywhere
But we pay no heed
'Stead of putting on the breaks
We keep picking up speed
Disaster's gettin' closer
Each time we meet
Goin' 90 Miles An Hour Down A Dead End Street
90 Miles An Hour Down A Dead End Street

Like a bad motorcycle with the devil on the seat
Goin' 90 Miles An Hour Down A Dead End Street
90 Miles An Hour Down A Dead End Street
90 Miles An Hour Down A Dead End Street

TOO MANY TIMES
Oh ruby and the sandman went for a walk
Said they'd be returning
Night was getting cold
As they unlocked the lock
Where hidden fires were burning
Some see beauty where others see a flaw
Some make unfaithful promises
To be upheld by the law
Except for the phone that continually rings
I can be reached by no one, it's a sad thing

(chorus)
Why'd you have to be so unkind
My heart's been broken in two places
Once cause you loved me and once cause you lied
Dog chews his bone, I eat my pride
Too many times

I can still remember our bodies at the wall
You could see right through me
I'd be digging gold on an African shore
Had it of brought you closer to me

(chorus)
Why'd you have to be so unkind
My heart's been broken in two places
Once cause you loved me and once cause you lied
Dog chews his bone, I eat my pride
Too many times

I can't imagine what I'd do
To see you standing there
I can't imagine what you'd say
To find your world had just been dropped
Alibi was shot
To find yourself just sinking
Right there on the spot

(chorus)
Why'd you have to be so unkind
My heart's been broken in two places
Once cause you loved me and once cause you lied
Dog chews his bone, I eat my pride
I lose myself, I fool my mind
Dog chews his bone, I eat my pride
Too many times

WHO'S BEEN TALKING
My baby took the train
Left me all alone
My baby took the train
And left me all alone
She knows I love her
But she done me wrong

My baby took the ticket
Long as my right arm
My baby bought the ticket
Long as her right arm
She's gonna' ride
Long as I've been gone from home

Now who's been talking
'Bout every little thing I do
Now who's been talking
'Bout every little thing I do
She was my baby
Until she heard the news

Good-bye baby
Sure hates to see you go
Oh good-bye baby
I sure hates to see you go
She was my baby
But I'm the causing of it all

I'm the causing of it all
I'm the causing of it all
I'm the causing of it all

SIMMERING POT
This day had started as so many others recently with the sound of swinging pans in the rain. Hungry, hungry, always hungry. Eggtooth climbed down from his bunk longing for pancakes. It was warm inside n' the big pot sat on the fire. Eggtooth sat next to it warming his feet. He noticed out of the side of his eye that it had shifted, turned slightly. And soon the simmering pot began bubbling and boiling. And as he listened the sound from the pot began speaking to him, drawing him into it's spell

Thrown like a fish back into the stream
Make my wish come true in this dream
Burn a lot of wood
Things get hot
Throw another bone in the simmering pot

Eggtooth fell into a dream. He was staring at a crack in the side of a rock where thousands of small black bugs were pouring out and screaming at each other at the top of their tiny lungs. It seems there had been a vote for a new Queen and Kings and no one agreed on anything. Some were holding small signs with messages like, "Don't feed us sugar." "More T.V." "We want shoes." The uproar became so loud it shook him from his spell. He woke up to see the pot scuttle across the floor and back to its place on the fire.

Thrown like a fish back into the stream
Make my wish come true in this dream
Burn a lot of wood
Things get hot
Throw another bone in the simmering pot

The chanting pot had Eggtooth back under its spell. This time he watched as a serpent crawled on its belly towards him. As the snake spoke the words appeared floating behind him in large stone letters. "Ahem, ahem, ... Words, words, words are formed by letters. Letters come from the alphabet. And the alphabet, haah! Well just take a walk down my long hall. I'll show you how the alphabet is made." Eggtooth knew the snake was trying to trick him into becoming dinner. He felt himself hypnotized by the snakes eyes. So he shook himself awake to find the room was dark, except for the glowing coals beneath the pot.

Thrown like a fish back into the stream
Make my wish come true in this dream
Burn a lot of wood
Things get hot
Throw another bone in the simmering pot
